Henry Albert "Hank" Azaria is one of the principal voice actors on the animated television series "The Simpsons" (1989-present), on which he performs the voices of Moe Szyslak, Apu Nahasapeemapetilon, Chief Wiggum, Comic Book Guy, Carl Carlson and in the case of episode 19 of season 7. . . . Dr. Zaius. Azaria joined the show with little voice acting experience, but became a regular in its second season. Many of his performances on the show are based on famous actors and characters; Moe's voice, for example, is based on actor Al Pacino.
This episode, "A Fish Called Selma" from March of 1996, is about the character of Troy McClure (voiced by the late Phil Hartman) and his sagging film career which is given a boost when he joins the cast of a new musical called "Stop the Planet of the Apes, I Want to Get Off!" This musical version of The Planet of the Apes stars Troy McClure in the Charlton Heston role. The title of the musical is a parody of the musical "Stop the World - I Want to Get Off!" and the song "Dr. Zaius" is a parody of the song "Rock Me Amadeus" by Falco.
Azaria notes that he spends "an embarrassingly small amount of time working on he Simpsons."e works for "an hour on Thursdays when we read through the script, then four hours on Monday when we record it, and I'll pop in again once or twice." He concludes it is "the best job in the world, as far as I'm concerned."
